Brain Buddies Support Group:
The Brain Tumor Clinic sponsors a brain tumor support group called Brain Buddies. The group, the only one of its kind in Alabama , began in April 2004 when brain tumor patients and their families expressed an interest for a formal meeting place to connect with one another. The group is open to brain tumor patients treated at UAB and elsewhere.
The group meets the third Monday of each month and is held on the 5 th floor of The Kirklin Clinic in the Neuro-Oncology clinic location. The meeting time is from 10:30 a.m. – 12 noon with a light snack provided. There will be no meeting in the month of December.
Brain Buddies provides a forum to discuss the unique issues that affect brain tumor patients, who often face significant neurological as well as physical limitations. It also provides a forum for family members to speak with others facing similar challenges.
Each session includes a short presentation by a speaker and a discussion. Former speakers have addressed topics like nutrition, mobility, memory, financial, and caregiver issues.
Cathie Robinson is the facilitator. Mrs. Robinson's husband, Jay, was 38 when he died from a brain tumor several years ago. “Brain tumors affect the whole family, not just the patient,” Mrs. Robinson says. “This group is made up of people going through similar issues, patients and caregivers.”
